Positioning Statement
Confetti-Headed, self portrait (2023)
My name is Jasmijn Vermeeren. I’m a Dutch lens-based crip artist, working with disability art. My practice draws from lived experiences with disability and investigates my own dialogue with the able-bodied gaze, touching upon themes such as identity, belonging and normalcy.
My work is about exploring emotions without judgment and examining the intricate layers of the self. It’s about embracing the ambiguity of who you are, choosing vulnerability, and cultivating a sense of curiosity. In doing so, I strive to highlight the complex relationship between personal identity and societal expectations and to question the identities imposed upon me.
To me, art is about making connection and embracing playfulness and curiosity. It’s about creating spaces in which it’s okay to feel unsure about who you are, to be vulnerable and having the freedom to investigate what you’ve learned to be.
